1964 Mercedes Benz 230SL Buyer’s Guide

1964 Mercedes Benz 230SLProduced from 1963 to 1967, the Mercedes 230SL was the successor to the widely popular 300 and 190 SL lines. The 1964 Mercedes Benz 230SL, as well as other models years, boasted an inline six-cylinder engine with multi-port fuel injection using a mechanical pump system that was adapted from the diesel engines. The 1964 230SL was also rear-wheel drive, but was equipped with independent rear suspension – a feature that greatly improved road handling. There are a number of Buyer’s Tips depending on the body style that you choose. For example, the early SL’s were sold with both the removable hard top and a soft top in the so-called “Coupe/Roadster” configuration, but there was also the “California Coupe” version that came with the removable hardtop only. In these models, the soft top well is removed, and a drop-down bench seat was installed in its place. This rear seat is small and not very usefully, however, this “California Coupe” remains one of the most sought-after collectors cars in the Mercedes SL line.
