Buying a 1951 Porsche 356 Pre-A

1951 Porsche 356 Pre-AFrom the time the Porsche 356 Pre-A was launched in 1949 to when it was discontinued in 1965, more than 76,000 356 Porsches would roll off the assembly line. While all Porsche 356 models are considered highly collectable, perhaps the most loved and cherished are the early 356 models known as the 356 Pre-A. Built from the beginning through to September 1955, Pre-A is not an official factory designation but rather a convenient way to differentiate the models that came before the release of the Porsche 356A in 1956. While the Pre-A and 356A look relatively similar, the two-piece windshield of the 1951 Porsche 356 Pre-A (and other Pre-A models) can distinguish it from the later. After 1955, the 356 would feature a bent windshield with one piece of glass. Other differentiating characteristics include 16-inch wheels, a small polished-aluminum hood handle and the shine down license plate in which the light assembly is mounted above the plate.

The upside to purchasing a Porsche 356 Pre-A is that their mechanics are generally long lived, although you should always check for good oil pressure, oil leaks and excessive smoke on models you’re considering with intact engines. The downside of purchasing an early 356 Pre-A is that these cars can be riddled with rust and body panels can be expensive to repair, so you’ll want to check them thoroughly. You’ll also on working examples want to inspect the front suspension, which can sometimes seize if not regularly maintained, as well as listen for any unusual knocks or rattles from the suspension when driving. These are just a few tips in a long list of Buyer’s Tips the team at The Beverly Hills Car Club can offer.
