Buying a 1952 Mercedes Benz 300 Cabriolet

1952 Mercedes Benz 300 CabrioletOne of the classiest and luxurious automobiles of its era, well-heeled buyers swooned over the Mercedes Benz Type 300. Available in both a Sedan Convertible (known as the Cabriolet D) and closed top Sedan, the Type 300 was known for its beauty, prestige, comfort and overall performance. In total, only 262 of the 1952 Mercedes Benz 300 Cabriolet would be produced. This incredibly limited production was actually the highest production year of the car’s decade-long run. In 1951, only 2 pre-production units would be produced. In 1953, 181 units would follow, while 87 and 59 units would be produced in 1954 and 1955 respectively. A variant of the Type 300, the 300C, would be released in 1955. The Mercedes Benz 300 Cabriolet was designed to stand against the popular Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud and was used by many celebrities, heads of state, government officials and, most notably, Konrad Adenauer, the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. Today, the Type 300 is most often referred to as the Adenauer Limousine.

1952 Mercedes Benz 300 Cabriolet Buyer’s Guide

Konrad Adenauer would own six custom Cabriolet and Sedan versions throughout his tenure and the Chancellor. Some of the features that were enjoyed by owners like Konrad included Becker radios, full leather and wood trim, writing desks, curtains, sunroofs, dividing partitions, and sirens. Finding a 1952 Mercedes Benz 300 Cabriolet with any of these features will only add to the value. Other important Buyer’s Tips include to check for rust around the headlights and in the bar sections under the doorsills. Trunk floors are also prone to rust due to trapped moisture. Overall, mechanical parts are readily available; however, trim chrome pieces and body panels are hard to find. Lastly, don’t be fooled by the car’s current geographic location. A car that is currently in California may not have always lived there. Always look for cars that come from the dry and sunny states like California, Arizona and Utah.
