Buying a 1956 Austin-Healey 100-4

1956 Austin-Healey 100-4While the original design of the Austin-Healey 100-4 was manufactured from 1953 to 1955, some minor style and performance changes happened in 1955 and yet again in 1956. The 1956 Austin Healey 100-4 now used a larger carburetor. Also during this time, two additional versions were available: a 100S and a 100M. The 100S was built for racing and featured an aluminum body, a 132hp version of the engine, the BN2 four-speed transmission minus the overdrive, and four-wheel disk brakes. Only 50 of these models were ever produced. The 100M, on the other hand, had an 110hp version of the original engine and several chassis modifications. Approximately 1,159 110Ms were sold, many of which were converted from standard 100-4s at Healeys Warwick factory. If youre considering the purchase of a 1956 Austin-Healey 100-4, these are some of your options.

1956 Austin-Healey 100-4 Buyers Guide

As with any classic car, there are some specific Buyers Tips that can help you while searching for the ideal 1956 Austin-Healey 100-4. Having assisted countless buyers and sellers with the purchase and sale of European and American classics across the globe, the California classic car dealership professionals at The Beverly Hills Car Club are happy to provide the following tips. First, the Austin-Healey 100-4 engine can often leak oil, but it can be minimized with proper maintenance and updates. If youre looking at an example where the engine has been rebuilt, be sure to ask if the crankshafts scroll-style rear main oil seal has been replaced. This is typically replaced with a modern lipped version to prevent future oil leaks. This would also be a good time to ask the owners if they have documentation regarding maintenance, restoration and/or ownership history. Secondly, because ground clearance is so tight, exhaust systems often get damaged. It would be a good idea to inspect the car by placing it on a lift. This is also a great way to determine the extent of any rust. Lastly, because of the age of these cars, the steering can often become loose, which is likely caused by worn bushes and kingpins. This is a relatively easy fix for a qualified mechanic.

These are just a few of the many Buyers Tips that the team of professionals at The Beverly Hills Car Club can assist you with when searching for a 1956 Austin-Healey 100-4 for your collection. Considered the original Healey, the 1956 100-4 would be a great addition to any garage. Connect today to get started!
