Buying a 1956 Jaguar XK140

1956 Jaguar XK140The release of the 1956 Jaguar XK140 marked the first time a Jaguar sports car was available with an automatic transmission. As with all Jaguar XK 140 models, it was available in three body styles. The OTS or Open Two Seater Roadster had a light canvas top that fit behind the seats and disappeared when lowered. The Drop Head Coupe, on the other hand, had a permanently mounted padded soft top that sat above the body of the car when lowered. Unlike the OTS, it had a fixed windscreen. Both, however, had beautiful walnut-veneered dash and door panels, and luxurious leather seating. Buyers also appreciated the availability of wire wheels and dual exhausts, which were options available on the 1956 Jaguar.

1956 Jaguar XK140 Buyer’s Guide

The interior of the 1956 Jaguar XK140 was also improved to accommodate taller drivers, with the addition of three inches of legroom, which resulted from moving the engine, firewall, and dash forward. Interestingly, the new arrangement left no room for the batter compartment, and the single battery was now located quite deep inside the wing on the inlet side, making the batter almost impossible to replace. This little detail was not something buyers were too concerned about until it came time to replace the battery. Nevertheless, the Jaguar XK 140 became one of the most desirable sport-luxury cars in the market, with a number of cars being exported primarily to America. A few Buyer’s Tips for this particular model include: inspecting for rust thoroughly, ensuring as many components as possible are original, having documentation regarding history, and being aware of the potential costs of maintenance and restoration.
