Produced from 1955 to 1957, the Triumph TR3 was the popular successor to the Triumph TR2. Built by Standard Motor Company, the Triumph TR3 featured an upgraded engine with larger-choke SU carburetors and 5 additional horsepower. Cylinder heads changed twice during the first year of production and after the first 3,300 units, a new high-port design was introduced with another additional 5 hp. The body was characterized by an egg crate grille with badges and the new model number. An additional third seat was available on option. In the autumn of 1956, the Triumph TR3 became the first series-built British car with standard disc brakes in the front and modified rear drums attached to a new axle. This improvement increased the popularity of the car and sales went up. A GT kit was introduced with the Triumph TR3, including an optional lift-off hardtop and a set of exterior door handles. A total of 4,726 units Triumph TR3 were built in 1956.
