Buying a 1957 Mercedes Benz 220S Coupe

1957 Mercedes Benz 220S CoupeThe Mercedes Benz 220S Coupe is perhaps one of the most luxurious and visually captivating cars to come out of this era of production. First launched by the German automaker as a Cabriolet in 1955 at the Frankfurt Auto Show, the 220S Coupe would come on the scene in October 1956. Taking cues from its Sedan counterpart, the chassis of the very successful 220 Sedan would be shortened by almost 5 inches to make a more personal and less expensive automobile than the Mercedes Benz 300. Longer doors also made for a very appealing look, and to save weight the doors were steel skimmed over alloy frames. Additional chrome pieces were added, as well as leather and wood trims, to make the 220S Coupe a beautiful, lighter weight and affordable option in the Mercedes lineup. Under the hood, the 1957 220S Coupe would receive a 2.2L inline-six with 99hp, which would later be increased with the addition of twin carburetors.

1957 Mercedes Benz 220S Coupe Buyer’s Guide

If you’re thinking about buying a 1957 Mercedes Benz 220S Coupe, there are a few important areas that you’ll want to inspect on any prospective purchase. First, due to the high cost of restoration, you’ll want to find the most complete example you can. Check to make sure the windshield wipers are working because they are difficult to repair due to a myriad of intricate parts, which are also hard to locate. Also make sure that the chrome pieces are intact. The chrome pieces on the Mercedes 220S Coupe and Cabriolets are very costly. To ensure the car has never been in a major accident and runs straight, look for gaps along the doors, trunk and hood. Also be sure to do a thorough inspection for rust, as these cars are highly prone to corrosion. Some of the most common areas you’ll find rust include the rear of the front fenders, the fender mounting edge, headlight area, bumper mounting area, dogleg arm, lower trunk edge, rear lower panel and the lower edge under the chrome.
