Buying a 1957 Porsche 356

1957 Porsche 356As 1957 approached, Porsche continued to see much success in both the European and American sports-luxury car market with its 356 line. As such, Porsche’s workforce and output continued to expand. Nevertheless, quality and superior craftsmanship was unrivaled and uncompromising. Even trim, upholstery and paint were noticeably superior for Porsche’s price class at the time. The 1957 Porsche 356 Type A saw very few changes from the 1956 model, however there were a few. For example, the speedometer exchanged places with the combination gauge. Additionally, four round taillights were replaced with horizontal teardrop types and the license plate back-up light was moved from above the plate to below it. Lastly, padded sun visors became standard in all body types. These minor changes would lead the way for bigger changes in the 1958 models. As part of the Porsche Type A models, these 1957 356 Porsche classics are some of the most sought-after.

1957 Porsche 356 Buyer’s Guide

The 1957 Porsche 356 was offered as a Cabriolet, a Coupe and a Roadster, with several different engine variations to choose from. Although more than 77,000 of the 356 models were sold throughout its 15-year production lifespan, it is estimated that only half remain today. Today, as it was in the 1950's, the convertible models remain some of the most sought-after, including the Speedster. For this reason, some of the coupes have been cut down to look like convertibles and many manufacturers are producing kit-cars that share the 356 resemblance. To ensure you are making a wise and knowledgeable decision regarding the purchase of your classic 356, it is imperative to validate the cars authenticity – either by a third party or by research.
