Buying a 1958 Mercedes Benz 220S Coupe

1958 Mercedes Benz 220S CoupeGerman automaker Mercedes Benz reintroduced six-cylinder models into its range in 1951 with the 220 and 300 types. Both would feature a single overhead camshaft engine, with the valves set across the head, rather than in line, and actuated by rockers. A 2,195cc engine that brought 80hp in standard form would power the 220. A separate chassis was also developed for these models, which would be replaced in 1956 with a new range featuring unitary construction Ponton body shells. In this new form, the 220S would debut as a Sedan at the 1956 Frankfurt Auto Show; the Coupe would follow in October 1956. Powered by an up-rated version of the existing 2.2L six-cylinder engine, the 1958 Mercedes Benz 220S Coupe was capable of reaching a top speed of 100mph. A shorter wheelbase was also adopted for the Coupe and Cabriolet models and the Sindelfingen factory coachwork was quite attractive both then and now. Apart from a slight power increase in 1957, very little changed on the 220S Coupe over its short life and production ceased in October 1959. 1958 Mercedes Benz 220S Coupe Buyer’s Guide

These Ponton models are great collector cars and make excellent everyday or weekend drivers. They are fun to drive and certainly turn heads wherever they go. With only 1,251 220S Coupes produced, however, it is one of the most desired Mercedes classics. When examining any prospective 220S, be aware that rust is the major issue with these cars. Unlike other high production Mercedes models that are prone to rust, the 220S Coupe was very limited and there are very few if any places making reproduction parts for the Pontons. All metal for these models must be hand fabricated. This can be both expensive and time consuming when it comes to restoration, therefore it is always advised to purchase the best body you can find. Mechanics on the other hand, because the car was based off the Sedan that saw more than 55,000 models produced, are readily available in most cases. When it doubt, lean towards the car with the better body.

These are just a few of the Buyer’s Tips for the 1958 Mercedes Benz 220S Coupe that The Beverly Hills Car Club has learned over their years in the classic car marketplace.
