Buying a 1963 Porsche 356SC

1963 Porsche 356 SCDuring the release of the Porsche 356C in 1963, the Normal, Super and Super 90 models of the previous 356B series would be replaced with two 356C models: the standard C and the SC. The 1963 Porsche 356SC offered Solex 40 PII carburetors and boasted 90 horsepower, while the standard 356C still utilized the Zenith carburetors and gave drivers approximately 75 horsepower. The 356SC engine achieved the highest power output in the 356 lineup and is one of the main draws to the 1963 Porsche 356SC classics today. In 1964, which was the year the Porsche 911 was introduced to the American market, production of the 356 would peak at 14,151 cars. Porsche would continue to sell the 356C and 356SC in North America through 1965, as demand for the model remained strong in the early days of the heavier Porsche 911 models. For those collectors and enthusiasts looking for the epitome of the classic Porsche 356 lineup, the 1963 Porsche 356SC should not be missed.

1963 Porsche 356SC Buyer’s Guide

While buying the best condition 1963 Porsche 356SC is always advised due to high restoration costs, items such as rust or body damage should not immediately eliminate a prospective purchase from your list. While restoration can be expensive, the recent appreciation in some of the special classic Porsche 356 models, such as the 356SC, indicate that it may be in your best interests to make the investment. Of course, it is always best to have any potential purchase thoroughly inspected by a qualified third-party prior to purchase and to explore restoration and repair costs. Rust is perhaps the main culprit in the overall condition of many of these 356 models, as rust protection was virtually nonexistent during this time. You’ll also want to check for completeness, as the most complete models will be the easiest to restore.
