Buying a 1966 Porsche 912 Coupe

1966 Porsche 912 CoupeShort lived, the Porsche 912 would be debuted in 1965 and would be pulled from the Porsche lineup in 1969. Designed to be the entry-level answer to the elimination of the Porsche 356, the 1966 Porsche 912 Coupe was essentially a 911 with a four-cylinder engine and a few cost-cutting styling changes. Sharing the same body shell, brakes, suspension and interior, the 912 Coupe would have a plastic trimmed dash rather than wood, two fewer gauges, and painted wheels rather than the chrome wheels used on the 911. In total, more than 25,000 Porsche 912 Coupe models would be produced between 1966 and 1969, while approximately 2,500 Targa models (released in 1967) would be manufactured. If you’re thinking about buying a 1966 Porsche 912 Coupe, you’ll find plenty to choose from, but you’ll want to ensure you find a model in the best condition you can, as restoration and maintenance costs are on par with their 911 counterparts and the price of restoring a 912 can often not be justified.
