Buying or Selling a Vintage 1967 Jaguar XKE?

Following the very successful launch of the Jaguar XKE Series 1 sports cars, an unofficially named Series 1 was released from 1967 to 1968, which bridged the gap between Series 1 and Series 2 cars. While the 1967 Jaguar XKE is very similar to the Series 1 cars, federal regulations in the United States meant that the XKE’s appearance and performance needed to change. Mechanically, twin Zenith-Stromberg carburetors were fitted with a hot intake tube that ran off the exhaust manifold, while this reduced horsepower slightly, the car was able to meet necessary emissions standards in the U.S. Buyers can recognize the federalized 4.2-litre engine by the carburetors, and the use of new cam covers with raised fins. Inside the car, changes included toggle switches being replaced by rocker switches, which would be less hazardous to passengers if involved in an accident, and a collapsible steering column. Additionally, the 1967 Jaguar saw the demise of the famous Jaguar starter button on the dash. It was replaced by a standard key start.

While Jaguar never officially referred to the late 1967 and early 1968 cars as anything other than Series 1, the Series 1 became the unofficial way of referring to them and an easy way to distinguish between the previous models. If you’re considering the purchase of a 1967 Jaguar XKE, you’ll find three body styles to choose from: the Roadster, the Fixed Head Coupe, and the Fixed Head Coupe 2+2. From 1964 to 1968, approximately 22,916 models were released with the Roadster being the most popular and the Fixed Head Coupe 2+2 being the least popular. With only 5,598 Series 1 2+2 models produced, they are among the most rare of the XKE’s. When searching for a 1967 Jaguar, be sure to check all models thoroughly for rust and originality. Over the decades, some of the Coupes have been modified to Roadsters. While this may not be of concern for some buyers, the long-term value of these modified XKE’s will be significantly less than that of an original.
