Buying a 1968 Mercedes Benz 280SE Coupe

1968 Mercedes Benz 280SE CoupeThe Mercedes Benz 280SE Coupe was first launched at the end of 1967 and would continue production until 1971. The 280SE Coupe and Cabriolet models were offered with a new 2.8L engine that offered 180hp when combined with Bosch mechanical fuel injection. In 1969, the 280SE 3.5, with a powerful 3.5L V-8 engine, would be introduced and would run alongside the 280SE until the end of 1971. In total, 3,797 Mercedes 280SE Coupes were produced, while 3,270 units of the 280SE 3.5 were manufactured. This lineup represents that last of the hand-built Mercedes, when only 13 cars per week would roll off the production line. Classics from the minute they came out of the factory, the Coupe and Cabriolets are some of the most highly desired. Road and Track magazine called the lineup one of the best looking body designs to come from any German concern, and they certainly lived up to this reputation. Today, while collectors often prefer the 280SE Coupe with the 3.5L engine, the early models with the 2.8L are a great opportunity for buyers. If you’re interested in buying a 1968 Mercedes Benz 280SE Coupe, you’ve come to the right place!

1968 Mercedes Benz 280SE Coupe Buyer’s Guide

Like most classics of this era, no 1968 Mercedes Benz 280SE Coupe should be purchased without a thorough inspection for rust. Whether you’re looking to restore a 280SE or want a clean example for your everyday driver, rust can be difficult to manage if it has already started. Always ask for sellers to allow you to inspect the underbelly of the car by placing it on a lift. Furthermore, you should inspect common areas like the wheel wells, doorsills and floorboards, which are known to be rust prone. Body panels can be found for these models, but can be expensive, so it is advised to find a 280SE with the best body you can.
