Buying a 1968 Porsche 912

1968 Porsche 912Today, all but the most diehard and experienced Porsche enthusiasts have forgotten about the Porsche 912. Fearing that they had gone too far up in the market, Porsche quickly introduced the 912 to bridge the gap between the prices of the retired 356 (which sold for approximately $4,100) and the new 911 (which sold for more than $6,400). Released in mid-1965, the Porsche 912 used a pushrod four-cylinder engine that was actually a slightly detuned version of the 356SC motor. In fact, the 1968 Porsche 912 (and other year models) was actually slightly faster than the old 356SC, as the car had superior aerodynamics. When it was introduced, it found itself right in the middle of the 356 and 911 price points at $4,700. Aside from the engine, only the exterior badge and the interior appointments distinguished the 912 from the 911. Options such as a sunroof, special order paints and the unique soft rear window Targa top add value to the 912’s today.
