Buying a 1969 Alfa Romeo Spider Duetto

1969 Alfa Romeo Spider Duetto Based on the Giulia 105-Series chassis, the Alfa Romeo Spider Duetto prototype was first shown at the Turin Motor Show in 1961 and would officially be launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1966. The Italian firm of Pininfarina was responsible for the design of the body, as well as the cars monocoque construction that featured the relatively new principles of crumple zones in the front and rear. Alfa Romeo would equip the Duetto with a 1,570cc variant of the traditional Alfa Romeo twin-cam four-cylinder engine and would give the car dual Weber carburetors and four-wheel disc brakes. This original Duetto was produced from 1966 to 1967 and would be followed by the 1750 Spider Veloce and later by the Spider 1300 Junior in 1968. If youre thinking about buying a 1969 Alfa Romeo Spider Duetto, youll find that these Junior models are most easily identified by their black-colored lower front bumper and by the 1,290cc engine that powered the car. The Junior version also lacked the plastic headlamp fairings of the 1750, as well as the hubcaps and opening quarterlight. These Series 1 Spiders (as they are often called) became widely recognized after the car appeared in the 1967 movie The Graduate with Dustin Hoffman.

1969 Alfa Romeo Spider Duetto Buyers Guide

It is estimated that approximately 2,680 examples of the 1300 Junior were produced from 1968 to 1969. When buying a 1969 Alfa Romeo Spider Duetto, always be sure to check engine and chassis numbers against Alfa Romeo historical records to ensure the model youre looking at is indeed an original. Similarly, be sure to have the classic Alfa Romeo inspected to ensure you understand the extent of any rust damage, which is popular on these models, as well as the overall condition of the body and mechanics. If youre thinking about buying an example for restoration, also take into consideration the cost and rarity of parts, as well as any parts that are included in the sale. On the other hand, if youre purchasing a fully restored example, be sure to ask the seller for any documentation they have on the restoration process. These types of documents can be very helpful in understanding the quality of the restoration and the history of the classic Alfa.
