Buying a 1970 Porsche 911

1970 Porsche 911Always the evolving brand, the Porsche 911 saw additional changes for the 1970 model year. The 1970 engine bore was enlarged by 4mm and increased the engine capacity to more than 2,165 cc. this made the six-cylinder engine more powerful and thus increased horsepower across the lineup. The 1970 Porsche 911 T was now rated at 125ph, the 911E at 155hp, and the 911S at 180hp. During this time, removing a number of amenities and using lightweight materials where possible also created a performance version of the 911S. For example, aluminum was used on the bumper and engine-lid, the interior received lighter-weight seats, and the door handles were replaced with chords. What resulted was a 1,840-pound, street-legal racecar. The 1970 Porsche 911 was now on par with the Jaguar E-Type and the Chevy Corvette, although often-considered better built.

1970 Porsche 911 Buyer’s Guide

There are a number of defining characteristics of the 1970 Porsche 911 that are unique. For example, this is the first year in which the under-floor areas were galvanized with a PVC undercoat, greatly reducing the potential for rust. 911T models from 1970 also received chrome bumper guards, while the 911E and S models received all rubber bumper guards. This was also the first year of trigger-type door handles, which replaced the press-button type. A visual difference also included the use of basket weave vinyl on models from 1969 to 1971 on the dash. These are just a few of the many ways to differentiate a 1970 911 from other year models.
