Buying a 1972 Porsche 911E Coupe

1972 Porsche 911 E CoupeThe 1972 model-year is a special one for Porsche 911 enthusiasts and collectors, as many believe this is the year that the 911 really came of age. An increase in displacement would boost engine capacity to 2.4L, which in the case of the 1972 Porsche 911E Coupe and Targa models, meant that the 911E offered 165 horsepower. To achieve this extra engine capacity, the stroke was increased from 66mm to 704.mm, while the bore was left unchanged. Other mechanical upgrades included the piston crowns being lowered to reduce the compression ratio. This change allowed the 911E to run on low-octane fuel, a move that would help the 911E meet new emissions requirements in the United States. A change to the well-known 915 transmission would also happen during this model-year. Although it was known for being stronger and better suited to the extra power that the 2.4L 911E now offered, it was heavier and had an impact on the car’s overall weight. With this new transmission came a change to a traditional H shifting pattern. Lastly, and one of the easiest ways to identify a 1972 Porsche 911E Coupe, was an oil-filler flap that was located below the right-hand rear window. This would be quickly changed in the next model-year because owners were too easily mistaking the oil-filler as a fuel-filler with disastrous results.
