The Maserati Merak was introduced in 1972 and was closely related to the Maserati Bora. Both cars shared the same structure and body panels, the main difference being that the Merak was powered by a 3-liter V6 instead of the Bora’s V8. The smaller engine gave space for two extra seats, which made the Merak a more convenient sports car. The engine was linked to a five-speed gearbox and a single-plate dry clutch and the car was equipped with a lubrication system, using an oil cooler and a dry sump. Providing an output of 190 hp, the Merak could reach a top speed of 150 mph. The design was the work of Giugiaro, who was commissioned to transform the Bora into the Merak. The brushed metal fascia dashboard from the Citroen SM, garmented with oval instrument gauges and a single-spoke steering wheel, characterized the interior.
