The name Testarossa comes from the red-painted cam covers on the engine (testarossa meaning “red head” in Italian). The long 12 year production run – from 1984 to 1996 – demonstrates the success of this model. Pininfarina designed the Ferrari Testarossa on the basis of the previous model, the Berlinetta Boxer. Designed as a 2-door, rear-wheel drive coupe, the Ferrari Testarossas most noticeable design cues were the side strakes running from the door to the rear fenders on each side. The rear suspension consisted of independent wishbones of unequal lengths, coil springs, anti-roll bar and telescopic shock absorbers on each side. The entire drivetrain of the car was designed to allow it to be removed as a single unit from under the car to service the timing belts. The car was fitted with a rear-mounted 4.4-L Colombo V12 engine generating 390 hp, which gave the a top speed of 180 mph and an initial acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds. Looking to purchase a classic Ferrari?
One of the most iconic sports cars from the 1980s, the 1987 Ferrari Testarossa is a powerful, beautiful and luxurious vehicle. The fact that Road & Track magazine featured a Testarossa nine times in just five years on their cover, along with the brands decision to keep the car in production over a decade, show how popular the model was.
