While the body remained relatively unchanged from previous years, the 1987 Porsche 911 received a great deal of power gain over the 1986 models. In fact, thanks to recalibrated electronics, horsepower increased to 214 at 5,900 rpm. A separate thermostatic electric fan was also added to the secondary oil cooler in the right front fender, and the clutch was upgraded from mechanical to hydraulic operation. The change to the clutch made stop-and-go driving less tiring and, paired with a new five-speed transaxle with cone synchronizers, made for more positive shifting. Publications such as Road & Track touted the new gearbox as a victory for Porsche. During 1987, the Turbo was again offered as a Coupe, Targa or Cabriolet, however with a price tag of more than $78,000, it was reserved for the well-heeled buyers of the day. Other additions to both the Carrera and Turbo included electric front-seat height and cushion-angle adjusters, and on some models, power lumbar support was a new separate option.
