Classic Jaguars of the 1970’s

Classic 1970’s Jaguar

During the 1970’s Jaguar, which was one of the world’s most renowned British sports car manufacturers at the time, would continue to ride on the success of the 1960’s Jaguar XKE models. In 1971, the line would receive another big advancement that would further enhance Jaguar’s reputation for engineering integrity and innovation. The release of the 5.3L V12 Jaguar engine would be highly anticipated. While it was originally engineered for the XJ12 saloon, it would be offered in the XKE models first. These late model Jaguar XKE models (from 1971 to 1976) would be referred to as the Series 3 models and would be offered in both the Roadster and Fixed Head Coupe 2+2 forms.

When buying classic Jaguars of the 1970’s, the V12 version of the XKE is always highly desired. Exceptionally graceful yet unwaveringly powerful, the Jaguar XKE continues to be ranked among the most beautiful sports cars in the world. In fact, even Enzo Ferrari would comment that the Jaguar XKE was the most beautiful car ever made! As with most classic cars, many enthusiasts believe that purchasing the last model of a series is the best option, as it encompasses all the changes that would come down the line. For this reason, many buyers turn to the classic Jaguars of the 1970’s. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular models from this decade.

Classic Jaguar XKE:

1972 Jaguar XKEManufactured for more than a decade, the Jaguar XKE would see new changes during the 1970’s. In 1971, the 5.3L V12 Jaguar engine would be released with much anticipation. With this change came updated braking systems and standard power steering. Also important during this time was the cancellation of the short wheelbase models and the move to only produce the Roadster and Fixed Head Coupe 2+2, which were designed for the long wheelbase. You can distinguish a 1970’s model Jaguar XKE by the large cross-slatted grille, flared wheel arches and by the badge on the rear that signifies the V12 engine. When buying a Jaguar XKE, always be sure to inspect the car thoroughly, including a thorough inspection for rust.
