As with the Mistral and the Ghibli, the Maserati Khamsin was named after a wind: hot a violent gust in the Egyptian desert. Designed by Marcello Gandini, the Maserati Khamsin was the first collaboration with Bertone. Updates were made in 1977, adding three horizontal slots on the nose for cooling purposes and a restyled dashboard as well as a new padded steering wheel inside. The Maserati Khamsin used an all-steel monocoque construction and the front-mid mounted engine gave the car a 50:50 weight distribution ratio. The Ghibli SS’s 320 hp 4.9-liter engine was carried over and fitted with a new Bosch electronic ignition system, Weber carburetors, and dry-sump lubrication.
