Produced from 1972 to 1983, the Maserati Merak was a mid-engine 2+2 sports car offered as a more affordable and more spacious alternative to the contemporary Maserati Bora. Introduced one year after the Bora, the Maserati Merak used parts of the structure and body panels of the Bora. The Merak was powered by a smaller 3-liter V6, in comparison to the 4.7-liter V8 of the Bora, and the extra space available was used to add a second row of seats in the back for children or small adults. Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign was hired again and asked to transform the Bora into the Merak. The Maserati Merak was smaller, featuring particular design cues such as a vertical rear window and a flat and horizontal engine bonnet with four ventilation slats.
