Buying A Mercedes 220SE Ponton 1958-1960

The Mercedes 220SE Ponton on the W128 chassis was a 6-cylinder available in a Sedan, Coupe, or Cabriolet body style. Produced from October 1958 to November 1960, the 220 SE was the last of the “Ponton” series, which had design roots and styling cues dating back to the Mercedes-Benz 180 sedan of 1953. The 220SE featured a unitized body/frame construction and fully independent suspension. All models were fitted with a 2.2L straight-six gasoline engine with aluminum head, overhead camshaft, and Bosch mechanical fuel injection. Over their limited production, there were only 1,942 Mercedes 220SE Cabriolet and Mercedes 220SE Coupes produced, making this one of the most highly desired collectors cars among Mercedes and German automobile enthusiasts.

Mercedes 220SE Cabriolet Buyer’s Tips

Of the 1,942 Mercedes 220SE Ponton units produced, 1,112 were made in the Cabriolet body style. Even today, the 220SE is a very rugged automobile and would make a great addition as an occasional driver or even as a second full-time driver. They are not very fast due to weight and low horsepower, but they are a beautiful example of early Mercedes history. If you are looking to buy Mercedes 220SE Cabriolet models, prices can range anywhere from low to near six figures.

Mercedes 220 SE Coupe Buyer’s Tips

Even more rare than the Cabriolet models, only 830 of the Mercedes 220SE Ponton Coupe models were produced. To determine you are looking at an original Mercedes 220 SE Coupe, be sure to find the engine number and the chassis number. Also note these Cabriolet and Coupe models are prone to rust and that there are not a lot of reproduction parts for them. All metal work must be hand fabricated, so a rust free example can be top-priority for many buyers.
