The Porsche 911 Turbo, known within the Porsche company as the Porsche 930, was manufactured between 1975 and 1989, and was considered Porsches top-of-the-line offering for its entire production duration. It also holds the distinction of being the fastest production car available in Germany at the time of its introduction. Although Porsche had started experimenting with turbo charged engines on their race cars during the late 1950s, the first Porsche 911 Turbo would be unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show of 1973 to test the market potential of the design. The production version was released at the Paris Auto Show in 1974 before being put into production in Europe for the 1975 model-year, marketed simply as the 911 Turbo. Models bound for the United States did not hit the market until 1976. Although the Porsche 911 Turbo was quite demanding, prone by its short wheelbase and rear engine layout to oversteer, sports car enthusiasts of the era loved the Porsche 911 Turbo. The first and most significant upgrades would come in 1978, when the engine was enlarged to 3.3L and an air-to-air intercooler was added. Later variations would include the popular Slant Nose in 1981, the fastest 911 Turbos starting in 1984, and the 911 Turbo models introduced in 1989 with the G50 transmission, a 5-speed manual.
