Buying a 1954 Porsche 356

1954 Porsche 356Considered part of the Pre-A designation, a designation recognized by enthusiasts and not by Porsche itself, the 1954 Porsche 356 is part of the early Porsche 356 models that are continuously sought-after by collectors across the globe. Offered in the popular Speedster body type as well as the Roadster and Coupe, the 1954 356 was part of 7,726 released from 1950 to 1955. In the early 1950’s convertibles were the most popular, and sometimes comprised more than 50% of total production. The best known of the convertibles was the Speedster. Introduced in late 1953 for release in 1954, the Speedster was an instant classic, particularly in the American, Southern California market. Max Hoffman, the sole U.S. importer of Porsches at the time, advised Ferdinand Porsche that a low-cost, open-top version would do well in the American market. Hoffman could not have foreseen the interest these cars would demand well beyond their era.

This may seem silly, but the things you will look for in a restoration project will be different than those in a mint-condition showroom piece. If you’re looking for a restoration project, the body is the most important. Avoid models with extensive rust and always be sure to verify engine and chassis numbers. If you’re looking for a showroom example, be sure to ask for all documentation regarding restoration as well as any ownership history that is available.
