Buying a 1955 Austin-Healey 100S

1955 Austin-Healey 100SOften compared to the Alfa Romeo 1900 Zagato or the Aston-Martin Bertone Spider of the mid-1950s, the 1955 Austin-Healey 100S was a special edition, high-performance version of the well-received Austin-Healey 100 line. Donald Healey, knowing that a competitive racing model would boost the image of the production models, would use several test models in 1953 and 1954 to come up with the final design, which would be showcased at the 1955 Sebring 12 Hours. Built primarily with racing in mind, the aluminum-bodied Austin-Healey 100S would boast 132hp. Only 50 production cars were manufactured, with an additional five test cars being hand built by the Donald Healey Motor Company at Warwick. The previously used cast iron cylinder head was replaced with an aluminum one, Dunlop disc brakes were fitted on the front and rear, a smaller grille was used, and the windscreen was plastic. To save weight, there were no bumpers or convertible top, which reduced the car by approximately 200lbs when compared to the standard edition. Various engine changes were also made, as well as upgraded suspension, twin fuel pumps, a strengthened chassis, a 20-gallon fuel tank, and Le Mans headlamps.
