Buying a 1957 Mercedes Benz 300D Cabriolet

1957 Mercedes Benz 300D CabrioletThe most extensive changes to the Mercedes Benz Type 300 would come in the fall of 1957. Resulting in a new model series designation, the W189, the Mercedes 300D would not only offer a longer wheelbase, but the overall look of the car would change considerably. The rear end of the car offered gently contoured side wings and vertical tail light design. The front was also redesigned with headlamps receiving trim rings, while rectangular fog lamps integrated into the wings formed a contrast to the main round headlamps. Drivers also loved the new rear window, which extended over the entire width and was wrapped around the sides. This, in conjunction with new retractable side windows and an overall 30 percent increase in window area, helped create a totally new sense of light and space; not to mention a better all-around view. During the time, this concept would be referred to as the pillarless full-vision body. Designed primarily for the American market, only three 300D Cabriolet units would roll off the production floor in 1957.

One of the most important components in your decision to purchase a 1957 Mercedes Benz 300D should be rust. Poor and fair condition examples that have some rust should always be inspected to determine the extent of the damage and whether or not it can be remedied. It should be mentioned that the Type 300 4-door Cabriolets are very large cars and therefore are extremely costly to restore. When you add in the premium for parts such as chrome trim and body pieces, you’re looking at quite the restoration. For these reasons, the California classic car dealership professionals always recommend purchasing the best 300D Cabriolet you can find within your budget. Always check for originality as well.
