Often referred to as the Ponton in reference to the unibody-type, pontoon-shaped exterior design, the Mercedes Benz W180 was introduced in March 1954 as the W180 I, or the 220A, and was later replaced with the W180 II, or the 220S. While the 220a was a top-of-the-line, up-scale rendition of the W120 model, the 1958 Mercedes Benz 220S (and other year models) was virtually the same, yet featured a more powerful engine, due to the use of twin-carburetors. Other changes included a one-piece front bumper, solid chrome strips under the doors, and the addition of a chrome strip running along the front fenders and doors. Offered as both a Cabriolet and Coupe, these 1958 Mercedes 220S Ponton models were highly sought-after during their time and remain so even today.
