Buying a 1959 Austin-Healey 3000

1959 Austin-Healey 3000While the Austin-Healey 3000 is often categorized as a separate family, it was little more than a 100-6 with a bigger engine and better brakes. It would not be until the mid 1960s that more significant and defining changes would be made. In fact, production would see three distinguishable versions. The MKI car was built from March 1959 to May 1961. The 1959 Austin-Healey 3000 falls into this category, and offers a 2,912cc six-cylinder engine with twin SU carburetors capable of 124hp. To assist in stopping this new power, the front brakes were upgraded to Girling disc brakes. The 1959 3000 was built in two open-top variations, which included the BN7 two-seater and the BT7 2+2 model. Buyers could add wire wheels, an overdrive gearbox, heater, adjustable steering column, a hardtop and two-tone paint at an additional cost. Of course, if youre looking to purchase a 1959 Austin-Healey 3000, any combination of these options can add value. Production of the MKII would begin in May 1961 and the MKIII in 1963.

1959 Austin-Healey 3000 Buyers Guide

The 1959 Austin-Healey 3000 had little to no rust proofing, so unless the car has been pampered, its likely there will be corrosion. This is why the weakest spots on the 1959 3000 are the chassis and body. As with any classic, be sure to inspect thoroughly for rust in the floor pans, sills, wings and wheel arches. Further, because only part of this is visible from underneath, you may need to check from inside by unscrewing the sill covers and pulling back the carpets. Secondly, while the ladder-frame chassis is basic, it can be damaged with the slightest collision. Check to see if the main rails are straight. Any distortion indicates accident damage, and while a chassis can be straightened, it is very expensive and best to be avoided. If the car is pulling to one side, this could be an indicator. Finally, the engines in Austin-Healeys are basically unstressed truck units, and they can run for huge mileages before needing a full overhaul. Maintained properly, you can expect to see mileages exceeding 200,000 miles. If the seller has maintenance records, this is an added benefit.
