The first models were fitted with a 4.3-liter Ford V8 engine, upgraded to a 4.7-liter unit and finally a 7-liter V8. For the last model, the chassis had to be revised to support the additional horsepower. Rated at 425 hp for the standard model and 485 hp for the competition car, the Shelby Cobra MkIII could reach a top speed of 164 to 185 mph. Also referred to as the AC Cobra 427 (for the original 427-cubic-inches engine), most units were actually fitted with Ford’s lower cost, 428 engine. Although the Shelby Cobra is a highly sought after classic nowadays and regarded as one of the icons of design and performance, the model was a financial failure and was discontinued in 1967.
