Selling or Buying a 1979 Ferrari 308 GT4?

1979 Ferrari 308 GT4Produced between 1973 and 1980, 2,826 examples of the Ferrari 308 GT4 were made, all the examples before 1976 being badged as Dino. The 1979 Ferrari 308 GT4 was an unconventional looking Ferrari, designed by Bertone. The car boasted a 3 Liter V8 engine with 240 hp for the U.S. market model, and 255 hp for the European market model. The U.S. version was heavier and slightly less powerful, due to stricter regulations. Linked to a V8 engine unit adapted on a road car for the first time, the transmission was a five speed with reverse all synchromesh unit. The engine was relatively high because it was mounted atop the transaxle. The car had good handling, although the suspension was tuned for under steering, which took away some of the 246 GT’s agility. The chassis was a longer version of the tubular space frame of the Dino 246 GT, giving more space in the back seats. Interestingly, the famous Formula One driver Niki Lauda helped Ferrari design and make this chassis.

1979 Ferrari 308 GT4 Buyer’s Guide

Although a 1979 Ferrari GT4 wasn’t the most wanted Ferrari at the time, the car had a very unique style that aged very well in time. A few things to know about the model is that the cabin can get hot due to the coolant lines running under, around or through the cabin, which is a common disadvantage of mid-engine vehicles at the time. Another inconvenient feature was the sideways-mounted radio, which wasn’t easy to access for the passenger. But many chose to enjoy the sound of the melodious V8 anyways. At the time the 1979 Ferrari 308 GT4 wasn’t very popular, because it didn’t show the usual attributes of other Ferrari models and if a customer was to pay high value for a vehicle, it might as well be a real Ferrari. Nowadays, this classic is a very desirable vehicle however. Make sure to check the history of the example you’re looking at in details, especially making sure that any upgrade was done by a qualified technician.
