Buying a 1984 Porsche 911

1984 Porsche 911During 1984, Porsche did away with the 911SC, and moving forward the “Carrera” moniker was adopted by the regular versions. The easiest way to distinguish post 1984 Porsche 911 models is the name “Carrera” appears on the engine lid rather than “911 SC.” During this year, the 911 also gained a new 3.2L engine and would now produce an impressive 200 horsepower. The new engine, equipped with Bosch’s latest Motronic fuel injection, provided superior performance. In fact, Motor Trend Magazine reported an impressive 0 to 60 of approximately 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 146mph. If this was not enough performance, buyers were also presented with the “Turbo look” body package for the 911 Carrera coupes, which mimicked the appearance of a Turbo, even offering the popular whale tail spoiler. The benefit to choosing this option was the elimination of the problematic turbocharger found on the authentic Turbo models. Often called the “poor man’s Turbo,” if you’re in the market for an authentic Porsche 911 Turbo, do not be fooled by this look-alike.
