Buying a 1989 Porsche 930

1989 Porsche 930Despite being the last year of production for the widely popular and historic Porsche 911 Type 930 line, the 1989 model-year would bring about one final and quite significant change. The 1989 Porsche 930 would offer a G-50 five-speed manual transmission. Previously used in the Carrera since 1987, it offered unique gear ratios to improve the Turbos acceleration and drivability, along with five rather than four speeds. With the G-50 transmission came hydraulic clutch actuation, as well as several tweaks to the torsion-bar tube to make room for the larger gearbox. Rear suspension tuning was also improved. Many Porsche critics believe that the five-speed manual should have been incorporated into the initial design of the Porsche 930 back in 1975, yet Porsche purists insist it was just Porsches way of showing they could indeed squeeze superior, unmatched performance out of just four gears. As such, many see the 1989 Porsche 930 as the ultimate addition to their Porsche 911 Turbo collection. The only model that could perhaps surpass the demand of the 1989 Porsche 930 is the Slant Nose version, which was called the 911 Turbo SE in the U.K. and the 930S in the U.S. It is easily recognizable by the Slant Nose front end and concealed pop-up headlamps.
