Introduced in 1989, the Porsche 964 is also known as the Porsche 911, Type 964. First released as a Carrera 4, four-wheel-drive model, a rear-wheel-drive Carrera 2 was added in 1990, as well as a Turbo variant. With the Type 964, Porsche released many technological improvements, including a Tiptronic automatic transmission and dual airbags. The design of the car was also thoroughly developed, with a drag coefficient of 0.32 and a retractable rear spoiler that unfolded at 50 mph. The shape of the body was not unanimously praised when the model was first introduced, but it became an icon in time. A limited edition RS-model was reintroduced in 1992, based on the 1973 Carrera RS model and the Porsche 964 RS America was marketed in the U.S. in 1993.
