Encouraged by the success of its first production model, the Maserati A6/1500, the Maserati brand executives would decide to continue developing road cars. Two series of the Maserati A6G were built between 1951 and 1957, both based on an evolution of the first A6 chassis and featuring 6-cylinder engines. The later Maserati A6G/2000’s engine was reworked and offered a 2-liter capacity and twin cams. The Maserati A6GCM and the Maserati A6GCS – G referring to cast iron block or Ghisa, CS to Corsa & Sports or race & sports, and M for monofaro or mono reflector – were the racing models of the series. Throughout the production run, many improvements were made to the model in order to better compete with twin cam cars on the track, especially Ferrari models. A significant increase in horsepower was achieved, from the first models’ 65 hp to the 170 hp of the Maserati A6G54 or A6G/2000.
