Buying A Mercedes Benz 300D

Mercedes Benz Type 300, was launched in late 1951 and was remarkably advanced and refined for its time. In fact, some view the Mercedes Benz 300D and its sister models – the 300, 300B and 300C– as the finest engineered saloon cars of its era, particularly when you compare the sophistication of its chassis and engine with other premium brands of the time. This makes the W186 a true icon of design, not only for Mercedes Benz, but also in the history of motorcar engineering. The W186 is also important in that it spawned other closely related and now highly prized types such as the famous 300SL Gullwing and the highly desired 300S and 300SC models. Interestingly, this pedigree has not meant that 300 models achieve the market value of these other types. A 4-door 300, for example, is perhaps worth approximately just 20% of a contemporary 2-door 300S despite its similar design and appearance.

Mercedes Benz 300D Buyer’s Tips

In its day, the Mercedes Benz 300D was a prestigious car often owned by the rich, famous, and powerful. Perhaps the most renowned owner was the first post-war Chancellor of West Germany, Konrad Adenauer, who owned six Type 300 automobiles over his tenure, and for which the 300 series is nicknamed. The Type 300 featured many luxury features designed for the elite businessman including a Becker radio and optional dictation machine, as well as writing desks, sirens, curtains, a dividing partition, and other such features. The 300D produced 160 horsepower with Bosch fuel injection and a compression ration of 8.55:1. From July 1958 to February 1962, only 65 units were produced, with the majority of these units being produced in 1958 and 1959. The most rare Mercedes Benz 300D model years are 1957 in which only 3 were produced, 1960 in which 16 were produced, and 1961 in which only one unit was produced.
