Buying or Selling a 1967 Intermeccanica Italia

1967 Intermeccanica ItaliaEight years after its 1959 founding in Turin, Italy by trained chemical engineer Frank Reisner, Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica released the 1967 Intermeccanica Italia which was the second production iteration of that particular sports car. The manufacturer had come a long way in a relatively short period, from its tuning kit origins and early foray into racing, to a strong (if occasionally troubled) run with the Apollo GT, Frank Reisners operation was making considerable headway into the high end automotive space. What the 1967 Intermeccanica Italia represented was a refining of both engineering and production processes for a company that had created for itself a very complex manufacturing scheme the first time around.

While the Apollo GT had been produced in phases, partially on Italian soil and partially on American, the 1967 Intermeccanica Italia was solely crafted in Italy before finding distribution in the United States. In keeping with the Intermeccanica spirit, however, the Italia was European in its aesthetics and American (Ford) under the hood. It was an all steel design and was on the larger end of the sports car spectrum. With its terrific appearance and powerful Ford V-8 engine, the Italia was a brilliant entry in the mid-1960s sports car arena and was enjoying a far larger production volume than its Apollo predecessor. Its sales reached and exceeded 100 units per year at its height, compared to the total of 90 Apollo GTs manufactured during its run. Nevertheless, the Italia is still an exceptionally rare car and may take some work to track down, unless you are working with a dealer versed in the art of finding difficult-to-find classics.
