Buying or Selling a 1967 Intermeccanica Murena

1967 Intermeccanica MurenaThe late-1960s marked a period of business growth for Frank Reisners Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica, a company which had struggled to find its place in the Euro-American sports market after venturing out from its humble tuning kit origins. A multi-year partnership with American Milt Brown, a California-based engineer, would prove more educational than it was profitable. Their Apollo GT would provide a working foundation for future models, but was itself ill fated due to an overly elaborate production process. With the later success of Reisners Italia GT, the next logical step was a sport wagon. Enter the 1967 Intermeccanica Murena, a Euro-American stab at the age-old question of how best to render a station wagon sporty.

With the 1967 Intermeccanica Murena, Reisner seemingly adopted a bigger is better mentality. The colossus of a sport wagon was 210 inches in length and weighed in at nearly four thousand pounds. It was characterized by enough of an angular sleekness to betray its Italian influence, even if some of that appeal ran counter to the sheer mass and unwieldiness of the unusual machine. In any event, even if markets would have responded to the 1967 Intermeccanica Murena on its meritsit did house a sizable Ford V-8 under its exaggeratedly long hoodthe pricing was at odds with consumer spending sensibilities. The result was that only eleven of the sport wagons were manufactured, despite an initial promise of considerable sales demand. It is the particular collector who will take an interest in such a niche piece of classic car history, and with a bit of industry expertise in their corner they may well find what theyre seeking.
