Buying or Selling a 1970 BMW 1800

1970 BMW 1800In 1970, the reputable and odds-defying Bavarian auto manufacturer BMW had turned the page on perhaps the most important decade of its existence. The year 1961 had seen the first New Class sedan, the 1500, showcased in a hype-fueling exhibition that signaled a reversal of the companys 1950s financial turmoil. Two years later, in 1963, the 1800 series debuted and appeared to answer consumer demand across the board. What ensued was a succession of years in which BMW could seemingly do no wrong, as the 1800 enjoyed terrific sales with each iteration. When the 1970 BMW 1800 rolled off the assembly line, there was a business as usual element in play, though given the series excellent track record, this was not a vulnerability.

The tightly coiled M10 engine (with only a couple of modifications) had carried the New Class sedans throughout the better part of a decade and enjoyed an untarnished reputation moving into the 1970s. A reimagined front grill distinguished the 1800 models from 1968 onward, but otherwise the 1970 BMW 1800 was an instantly recognizable car to consumers on both sides of the Atlantic. What is noteworthy about 1970 from a commercial standpoint was the spike in unit sales that set the 1970 BMW 1800 apart from the 1967-1969 models. None of those had reached 10,000 units sold, while the 1970 achieved nearly 15,000. Buyers interested in latter year versions of the New Class sedans therefore have a higher likelihood of finding the 1970 release than they do those of the late-1960s. That said, a savvy and well-connected classic car dealer can help you track down the specific model to match your tastes.
