Buying or Selling a 1972 BMW E9

1972 BMW E9The year 1972 saw BMWs New Class sedans enter their tenth production year since the 1500 rolled off the assembly lines in 1962and a lot had changed. Certain aspects of each New Class entry were maintained throughout this period, but a great deal of engineering and design work had been undertaken throughout what had been an exceedingly prosperous decade for Bavarian Motor Works. In the case of the 1972 BMW E9, the difference had gotten underway in 1971 when BMW began releasing the 3.0 CS while the 2.8-liter E9 was still in production. What separated the 3.0-liter M30 motor from its 2.8-liter predecessor was just enough power and torque to be noticeable across the higher speed spectrum. And thats essentially what the 1972 BMW E9 sought to achieve: a step up in power.

In much the same way the M10 SOHC motor had dominated (though not exclusively) BMWs 1960s fleet of Neue Klasse sedans and coup variants, the M30 was becoming central to the manufacturers commercial operation. The 2986 cc engine yielded a gutsy 180 horsepower at 6000 RPMs, or about 10 more sets of hooves than what the 2788 cc version could produce. In this way, the 1972 BMW E9 marked another step in BMWs steady progression towards high-class sportiness. Modern drivers will feel themselves acquainted with the E9 in terms of power, comfort, and style; what BMW had started in 1961 was materializing reliably and exceeding expectations at every turn.
