It was now 13 years since Frank Reisner had founded Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica in 1959 Turin, Italy, and the former engineer had persisted stubbornly, given a few setbacks, in the American sports car scene. Reisners approach to the business had always been unusual and his results mixed, but the 1972 Intermeccanica Italia was testament to a largely successful enterprise. Unwaveringly devoted to the concept of international collaboration, Reisner salvaged Frank Griffiths largely British-designed Griffith GT and gave rise to what was first the Torino and eventually the Italia. The 1972 Intermeccanica Italia was the final iteration of the model and had outsold its immediate predecessors considerably.
Unlike the Apollo GT which had seen its market viability hindered by a cumbersome production process, the 1972 Intermeccanica Italia was produced solely in Italy before making its way to the United States for sales distribution. But the international collaboration aspect of Reisners vision was still in play, as the Italian-built steel-framed chassis conceptualized by former BRM designer John Crosthwaite was outfitted with an American (Ford) V-8 powertrain. The appeal for American sports car buyers was obvious: European aesthetics coupled with American power; a remarkable combination. Even so, the sales rarely exceeded 100 per year, making the Italia a very rare relic of the 1960s/1970s sports car scene.
