Intermeccanica was a custom design car company, founded by Frank and Paula Reisner in 1959. The company started by making speed equipment kits and exhaust systems. A US Formula Junior racer importer requested a racing car design from Intermeccanica and the model created was a real success, officially timed over 140 mph at the Monza track. After building race cars, Intermeccanica moved to making unique bodies for hand-assembled road cars. In 1962, the company released the Apollo prototype that won best in show at the New York Auto Show. Another highly successful model was the Torino, later re-branded as the Italia, a sexy and sporty design that was shipped to the U.S. from 1968 and sold in close to 400 units in North America and Germany. Intermeccanica developed the Indra with Bitter Cars and Opel in 1971.In 1975, the company relocated to California and started replica cars.
