Buying or Selling a Intermeccanica Italia

Intermeccanica ItaliaFounded in 1959 Turin, Italy by Frank Reisner, a chemical engineer by training, Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica originally produced tuning kits and dabbled a bit in the European racing scene. Two years later, in 1961, a partnership between Reisner and American engineer Milt Brown led to the Intermeccanica Apollo GT series, an Italian-designed sports car powered by a hefty Buick V-8. Relatively short-lived and producing only 90 units during its run, the Apollo GT series ended in 1965 and left an opening for what would become the Intermeccanica Italia. Learning lessons from the smaller Apollo project, Reisner would, in partnership with Jack Griffith and English chassis designer John Crosthwaite, succeed in producing a scalable sports car.

The Intermeccanica Italia was originally titled the Torino, with the name change coming about later in its production timeline. Whereas the Apollo GTs had been partially manufactured in Italy (chassis/body) and partially in California (powertrain), the Intermeccanica Italia was produced entirely in Italy and distributed in the United States. This streamlining of the production process contributed greatly to Reisners success in scaling the unit manufacturing figures up to 100 per year, sometimes more. Much like the Apollo GT, on the other hand, the Italia was Italian sports car on the outside, hefty American motor on the inside. Rather than a Buick engine, however, this time around it was a Ford V-8 at work. Not as rare as its Apollo GT predecessor, collectors might still benefit from working with an established and reputable dealer in locating and purchasing their own Italia.
