Car Tales: A Visit to Paintsville KY for a 1967 Ferrari 330 GTC
‘That’s what happened when I heard through the grapevine about a Verde Pino green 1967 Ferrari 330 GTC, a state of the art collectible vehicle even for this legendarily exclusive marque – just under 600 ever made of this model and extremely rare.
‘I heard there had been a substantial offer. But I knew a Ferrari 330 GTC was worth much more than that, even though this one had been in what I could see from the pictures was a not inconsiderable crash – which I could see, however, was thoroughly fixable. In fact, it was because of that accident that the owner had put the car away, never getting round to fixing it up. What could have been a problem to others, was an advantage to me: I suspected if it had been off the road for a while, it would mean it had low mileage – which turned out to be true. First, however, I wanted to see it, to physically touch this peerless beauty.
‘I contacted the seller. Fortunately he had heard of me and knew that I had bought vintage Ferraris for a while. So he was happy that I contacted him. He told me he was somewhere I had never heard of before: Paintsville, Kentucky. I told him that I would be there the next day.
‘Easier said than done: Paintsville is a tiny town of around 4,000 people, and getting there was complicated. I ended up flying in there from Los Angeles on a small propeller-driven plane. At the local airport, where I found the weather was unexpectedly cold, I picked up the compact rental car I had booked and drove to the address the seller had given me.
‘In fact the location was a new car dealership. The Ferrari’s owner had passed away and his brother had had it in storage there at his premises for some time: you could tell by the thick dust on it. The car was sitting in back of the dealership, in storage, for me to inspect.
‘Although the Ferrari had suffered quite badly from a collision with another vehicle and its left front wing had been significantly battered, it looked otherwise to be in fine shape. It started first time and the engine ticked over with that Ferrari soft throb. I could tell this was still a fine example of a Ferrari 330 GTC. Moreover, it was complete, with no missing parts.
‘We started talking money. It was easy and all very gentlemanly. We soon came to a price, much more than that previous offer.
‘Before my flight out of Paintsville was due to take off I had a little time. I found main street and in a diner that could have come straight from the 1940s I relaxed over some fine local cooking, my relaxing brain serenaded by ancient country music sailing out of an equally vintage valve radio.
‘After transferring elsewhere from the tiny propeller plane that lifted me out of there, I finally returned to Los Angeles at around midnight. A good day’s work done.
‘Oh, and I sold the Ferrari 330 GTC for a price that fully justified the price of my plane to Paintsville.
‘Although it was a very satisfying transaction, I do have one regret. Once the Ferrari had been fixed up, I wished I could keep the car for myself. That Verde Pino green was the sickest colour!
‘But, unfortunately, you can’t keep them all!’
