Buying a 1958 Mercedes Benz 220S Cabriolet

1958 Mercedes Benz 220S CabrioletThe 1958 Mercedes Benz 220S Cabriolet was known to the world as the Mercedes Benz Ponton, however at internally at Mercedes Benz, the car was known as the W180. The Ponton nickname was thanks to the cars unibody-type construction and pontoon-shaped exterior design, and would become the generally accepted name for the series. First introduced in March 1954, the W180 I, also known as the 220A, would later be replaced with the W180 II, or the 220S. The 220S was virtually the same as the 220A, yet offered a more powerful engine thanks to the addition of twin carburetors. Other noticeable changes included a one-piece front bumper, solid chrome strips under the doors, and the addition of a chrome strip running along the front fenders and doors. Offered as a Cabriolet and as a Coupe, the Cabriolets are easily the most desirable of the lineup today, with only 2,178 being produced from 1956 to October 1959.

1958 Mercedes Benz 220S Cabriolet Buyer's Guide

When the 1958 Mercedes Benz 220S Cabriolet is maintained and properly taken care of, it easily increases in value. In fact, condition is perhaps the main player in the value of these 220S classics. When selecting a model for purchase, walk around the car. Check the body for rust or obvious signs of collision and/or repair. Watch for missing components such as chrome trip, windshield wipers, headlamps and mirrors. Windshield wipers and chrome pieces in particular for these models can be quite costly to restore or purchase. You'll also want to check the cars authenticity. This can be established by checking the chassis number, which will be stamped on the forked support above the plate, and by verifying the engine number found on the crankcase above the plate. You can verify the cars authenticity by matching the engine and chassis numbers to Mercedes Benz records. Don't know where to start? The team at The Beverly Hills Car Club can assist you with this process. These are just a few of the Buyer's Tips they've learned over the years dealing with some of the industrys most coveted classics.
