Buying a 1964 Jaguar XKE Convertible

1964 Jaguar XKE ConvertibleThe 1964 Jaguar XKE Convertible and Fixed Head Coupe would mark the launch of the new 4.2L engine. There was some debate as to whether or not this increase was an improvement, as the larger engine was less rev happy. The power output was the same, but the torque would increase from 260 lb-ft to 282 lb-ft. American customers welcomed the improvement in torque, as well as improvements in oil consumption. Jaguar would proudly announce this increase in engine size on the trunk lid with a plaque that read E Type Jaguar 4.2, while previous models simply read Jaguar. Another mechanical upgrade was the introduction of an all-synchromesh four-speed transmission with improved shifting characteristics. Other notable changes included the electrical system’s change from a positive to a negative ground, aluminum interior surfaces replaced by black vinyl, and the change to more comfortable, although less stylish seats. If you’re thinking about buying one of these early model Jaguar XKE classics, these are some of the defining characteristics of the 1964 models.

Rust is a damaging problem on any classic Jaguar, so be sure to perform a thorough investigation into any signs of rust.
