Buying a 1959 Aston Martin DB Mark III

1959 Aston Martin DB Mark IIIThe iconic Aston Martin DB2, considered the first true postwar Aston Martin, was introduced in May 1950. The ultimate and most refined variant, the Aston Martin DB Mark III, would debut in March 1956 and saw production through July 1959, when the DB4 would launch as its successor. For the launch of the DB Mark III, legendary Aston Martin engineer Tadek Marek would revise the existing six-cylinder Lagonda engine design, with output increasing the 162hp or 178hp with the optional twin exhaust system. Front disc brakes also became optional during this time, and would become standard after the first 100 DB Mark III models were produced. Many of those 100 were updated later. Both the exterior and interior were updated at the time; most notably with a revised grille opening that was inspired by the DB3S sports racer. A Frank Feeley-revised instrument panel would move the gauges directly in front of the driver and would mimic the grille’s shape. In total, it is estimated that approximately 552 DB Mark III models were produced, with the majority being in Fixed-Head Coupe form. Approximately 84 were Drophead Coupes.
