1980 was the last year of production for the Series 1 Lotus Eclat, soon replaced by the Series 2. The main differences between the two models were in the mechanics and chassis. The Series 2 cars were fitted with a galvanized chassis to avoid corrosion of the felt fitted between the body and the steel cross member of the chassis, which was a serious issue on previous models. A 2.2-liter engine with 160 hp and increased torque now powered the car. The engine was matted to a new Getrag five-speed gearbox, which was more precise and gave a solid feeling to the gear change. 0 to 60 mph was reached in about eight seconds but the most fun was in the corners, thanks to Lotus legendary handling. The Lotus Eclat’s design was sleek and wedged, featuring a traditional coupe roofline, pop-up lights, and a fastback rear end.
