Designed during the height of Chrysler’s Virgil Exner “Forward Look” era, the Valiant brought distinctive styling and compact dimensions to Chrysler’s lineup. Its unibody construction is complemented by a long hood, short rear deck, pronounced character lines running along the body, and sloping rear roof pillars that give the car its unmistakable profile.

Power comes from Chrysler’s 170-cubic-inch (2.8-liter) Slant-Six inline-six engine, equipped with a single-barrel carburetor. The engine is paired with Chrysler’s TorqueFlite automatic transmission, operated through the manufacturer’s distinctive push-button selector mounted to the left side of the instrument cluster. The push-button transmission controls were one of Chrysler’s most recognizable features of the period and gave the Valiant a distinctly different driving interface from most cars of its era.
The exterior features bright red paintwork, chrome bumpers, dual round sideview mirrors, and clear glass surrounded by brightwork trim. At the front, the Valiant uses a distinctive quad-headlight arrangement set into recessed black bezels, flanking an egg-crate-style grille with a vertical Valiant “V” emblem. The trunk lid incorporates Chrysler’s molded “Continental” styling, creating the appearance of a spare tire housing without an actual external spare tire. A single exhaust pipe exits at the left rear of the car, extending past the rear bumper.
Inside, the cabin is fitted with front low-back bucket seats and a rear bench seat upholstered in two-tone Black vinyl with patterned gray woven-cloth inserts and light gray piping. The straightforward dashboard includes a push-button radio, while manual window cranks and bright trim add to the original early-1960s character.
The Valiant was introduced for 1960 as a new compact model and became an important part of Chrysler’s response to the growing demand for smaller American cars. Its unibody construction also distinguished it from many traditional body-on-frame American vehicles of the time, while the Slant-Six became known for its unusual 30-degree cylinder-bank angle, which allowed Chrysler to package a longer-stroke inline-six engine within a relatively compact engine bay.
Additional equipment includes drum brakes and 13-inch red steel wheels finished with chrome hubcaps, complementing the car’s period appearance without taking away from its original styling.
